This particular ceremony will be for Jushiro Ukitake, former captain of the 13th Division. Assistant captains are tasked with gathering the ritual's sacrifices but are not allowed to participate in the actual ceremony as it's traditionally restricted to captains.
According to Renji, the Konso Reisai involves sacrificing Hollows in front of the graves of fallen captains who died 12 years ago. Ichigo, who's living on Earth as a translator, learns about the ceremony from Captain Renji who invites him to attend. The majority of the new Bleach manga centers on the preparation of the Konso Reisai. At first, the ceremony's only fault seemed to be its inherent barbarism, but the Shinigami later discover the terrifying truth of the Konso Reisai from a slain Arrancar who emerges from hell to impart the gruesome details.
